Day #100: Burn Down the Mission

Burn Down the Mission
(from The Mayor of London album)

Tell me there’s a place for me
In this world and I’ll believe you
I’ll set sail and claim my land
And all I’ll ask is for the truth

There’s so many walls around it
Built and filled with ancient lies
Many years since it’s been questioned
Truth can’t grow til comfort dies

Chorus:
It’s time to burn down the mission
All those old-time ways of living
It’s time to burn down the mission
All those old-world ways of thinking
There’s nothing here for me
Clear out the halls and see
The time has come to burn it all down

You want me to have a better life
Only in the shadow cast by yours
I’d rather live and die inside the light
You can only see from open doors

Chorus

Day #93: Crazy Water

Crazy Water

Nobody’s explained
How the world works
at least not to me
I’m lost on the globe
Wandering like Diogenes

Is this really how everything
Is supposed to be?
I can’t find a smile
searching as far as I can see

Chorus:
So let me dive in to this crazy water
And I’ll believe what everybody says
Good guys win and bad guys lose
The Golden Rule was still big news
Before I filled my glass with crazy water

So suffering folk and starving kids
Make sense to you?
Or are there enough hearts in the world
Who know what to do?

Chorus

Day #86: Take Me to the Pilot

Take Me to the Pilot

Oh, thank you calendar
Once more you’ve set me free
You’ve brought me Friday night
It’s been a long long long long week for me

Oh, thank you, dancing shoes
You’ve saved my aching feet
I need some fun tonight
It’s been a oh-just-shoot-me week for me

But things are looking up, I say,
Tell good times I’m on my way

Chorus:
So take me to the pilot
Who controls the fun in this town
It’s time to get us all off the ground
So take me to the pilot
Yeah, take me to the pilot

Oh, thank you alcohol
Once more you’ve set me free
I need some fun tonight
It’s been a long, sad, lonely week for me

But things are looking up, I say,
Tell good times I’m on my way

Chorus

Day #79: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

At last I was a leaf like all the rest
All colorful and dancing in the wind
Some magic made a place I want to be
And finally a place where I fit in

This campus in the fall had leaves to spare
And even one to match me, hand in hand
Is this the whole world or just part of me
Either way, I never want to land

Chorus:
And now it’s time to say
Goodbye yellow brick road
I’ve followed you as far as I could go
But now it’s time to wake
Back to Kansas, back inside
A black-and-white world you will never know

However long my time went by too fast
And everything I learned is here with me
And I’ll always remember that sweet time
Some magic made a place I want to be

Chorus

Day #65: High Flying Bird

High Flying Bird

The world through this window
Is all I’ve ever seen
Caged in this life sentence
It’s like a movie scene

The years in this prison
All took their toll on me
And no chance at parole
What Jailer could this be

Chorus:
But someday I’ll escape these walls
And Chain that still holds me
And be the high flying bird
That I was meant to be

The window is breaking
I know I’ll soon be free
While doctors are still heroes
To an eight-year-old like me

Chorus

And be the high flying bird
That I was meant to be

Day #58: Tiny Dancer

Tiny Dancer

Another night on this dim stage
In the hippest part of town
The coffeehouse patrons wait
For one more poem to bring them down

Amid the finger-snaps and sighs
She stood and spread her arms like wings
And then she danced and spun like wind
To spoken words no one could sing

She’s my tiny dancer
Bringing all my words to life
She’s a starry beauty,
Evening colored, feather light
Now we make a love song
My tiny dancer here tonight

Gliding down the boulevard
Between the chairs, she turns to me
Suddenly I’m not on stage
But in the sky, a soul set free
