Can an amateur songwriter write a new song every day? Oh, heck, probably not…but it will be fun to try!
I’m new at blogs, but I’ve written a few songs before. The words and music just sort of come to me: sometimes a melody will emerge and I’ll add words–and sometimes the reverse.
I had this big dream of writing songs for a band, but that hasn’t worked out so far. Until then, there’s the Free Lyrics Project.
I got this crazy idea to try to post a new one to this blog every day. We’ll see how it goes. I just want to share them with other people.
Anyway, if you see a lyric you like, feel free to put your own music to it and have fun! These lyrics are posted under the Creative Commons License.
I do ask that if you do put these lyrics to music, please send me a recording of it. I’d love to hear someone else’s take on the song.
Similarly, if you’d like to know what melody goes with a particular song (many, but not all, will have one), let me know. I don’t have the equipment or skill to record music, but I can sketch a crude lead sheet with the chords and melodies.
Also…this should go without saying, but I’m not [insert name of your favorite singer]–not a professional songwriter. You won’t find any future Grammy winners on this blog!
On the other hand, that leaves me free to write whatever I want and call it a song: my lyrics are sometimes corny, sometimes goofy, don’t always rhyme or have a strict meter. I read a LOT, so the themes, imagery, and metaphors get a little “out there” sometimes. This is just a fun little diversion. Hopefully you’ll find something you like.
One last note: my lyrics are almost always in this structure: Verse – Verse – Chorus – Verse – Chorus. All the real songs I listen to have this structure, so I assume that it’s more or less standard.
